Spanish shipyard LaNaval and shipping company Baleària reached an agreement to build two LNG-driven ferries – said to be »among[ds_preview] the largest in Europe«. The order, which is expected to be firm in two month, will imply an investment of around 350mill.€. For LaNaval it would be a milestone as the vessels would be the biggest ever built in a Spanish shipyard, the company said in a statement.

Baleària intends to reduce CO2 emissions by 30%. The construction if the first unit will start in 2016 and will be in operation during the first quarter of 2018. According to the statement, the company is leader in the transport of passengers and cargo in the transit to the Balearic Islands and one of the main operators in the Strait of Gibraltar. In 2014, it carried 3.3mill passengers and 4.1mill. lanemeters of RoRo cargo. The fleet currently consists of 23 vessels.
