Danish shipping company Norden has receive[ds_preview]d its largest contract ever for the shipping of coal. From beginning of 2017 Norden will transport 20 to 24 mill. t for the energy power company GNPower.

GNPower Mariveles Coal Plant Ltd. Co. owns and operates a modern power plant in the Bataan province on Luzon Island in the Philippines and entered into a 10-year-contract with Norden. In terms of volume, this makes it the largest contract in the history of the shipping company.

Commenting on the new contract, CEO Jan Rindbo said: »We are both proud and happy that GNPower has chosen us to handle the transportation of coal to this modern power plant over the coming 10 years. We look forward to extending and strengthening our collaboration with GNPower further, and we are now focusing on living up to the high expectations which GNPower and other customers can rightly have for us.« Anthony Becker, COO of GNPower stated that his company is impressed by the cooperation so far, what lead to the new contract.

Norden operates a mix of owned and chartered tonnage in total 199 dry cargo- (including single trip chartered vessels and INC vessels) and 39 tanker vessels. In addition it has a newbuilding programme with 15 vessels on order (dry cargo (owned) 8, tanker (owned and chartered) 7).

The GNPower power plant in Bataan began its production in 2013, and from the start Norden has transported coal to the plant on behalf of an Indonesian coal producer. Going forward, the carrier will be dealing directly with GNPower as the customer, as the power plant buys the coal from various producers in Indonesia, whereupon it will be sailed to the Philippines. The transports will be carried out on Panamax vessels and will involve 25-30 trips a year. Each transport will take approximately 20 days.

Just recently, the Danish company hired Christian Vinther Christensen as new head of the Dry Cargo Department, coming from the dry cargo operator Western Bulk.
