Dutch dredging and offshore group Van Oord looks back at weeks of several contract signings bringing business around the world
A more consultative project was initiated and fixed for works in Indonesia. Van Oord joined as a new partner an[ds_preview] exchange programme called »Dutch Training & Exposure Programm Rotterdam – DKI Jakarta«, which is run by the Indonesian capital Jakarta, the Municipality of Rotterdam, Nuffic-Neso Indonesia, the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, the Dutch Embassy in Jakarta and the Delfland Water Authority.

The two maritime hubs intend to exchange knowledge about urban water management and the effects of climate change. The new partnership agreement was signed during Prime Minister Rutte’s recent mission to Indonesia. »Just as is the case in our own low-lying country, protecting the coast in the region of Jakarta has been a point of major concern. Rotterdam and Jakarta are both delta cities and there is much they can learn from one another«, Van Oord said in a statement. The company’s part will be to share knowledge in the fields of land reclamation and dredging.

Another contract leads to offshore works in Egypt. Van Oord has been awarded two contracts by international contractor Subsea 7. The assignments include the construction of a landfall and the execution of subsea rock installation works. According to the dredging company, the projects are part of the West Nile Delta project, which comprises the development of a series of gas fields, located 65km off the northern coast of Egypt. Final client is oil and gas company BP. Preparations on site have already started.

The landfall scope of work consists of the installation of a cofferdam, trenching and pipe pull activities and will be executed in 2017. The landfall location is at the Burrulus terminal near Idku, 50km from Alexandria. Van Oord will deploy a trailing suction hopper dredger, backhoe dredger and 600t winch. Flexible fallpipe vessel »Stornes« will be deployed for rock installation to prevent upheaval buckling.

A few days earlier Porto Central, a Brazilian joint venture between the Port of Rotterdam and TPK Logística, awarded Van Oord a contract for the development and construction of Porto Central – a greenfield multipurpose port in Espírito Santo, Brazil. An integrated team was established, which works on a fast-track process from conceptual design to construction and operation of the port. »This development approach enables an early identification of risks and opportunities and leads to optimized designs and work methods, gives flexibility to make adjustments according to the port’s clients’ needs and ensures an early start of port operations«, Porto Central said.

In a first phase, the partner put a focus on potential clients of the port and their needs. Also, the conditions and requirements of the necessary permits and approvals will be fully incorporated in the designs and plans. The second phase deals with optimizing construction methods and schedules to enable the port operators to start as soon as possible. The third phase will be the actual construction of the port.

According to the announcement, the port will be a deep-water port with up to 25m draft, capable of receiving the largest bulk carriers in the world and Very Large Crude Oil Carriers.
