The first LNG powered Italian ferry, to be built at Sefine Shipyard in Turkey will be equipped with a supply system by MAN Cryo.

MAN Diesel & Turbo’s marine LNG fuel-gas-system manufacturer – has signed a contract with Sefine to deliver a marine LNG fuel-gas supply system (FG[ds_preview]SS) for the ferry. The system consists of a 150 m3 vacuum-insulated storage tank, with auxiliary equipment, including an LNG vaporizer, pressure build-up unit, bunker station and heat exchanger.

It will supply gas to the ferry´s three dual-fuel propulsion engines and is scheduled for delivery in November 2017. The vessel will be the first of its kind with LNG propulsion. At the end of 2016, Norway-based LMG Marine had won the contract to design the double-ended ferry for Italian owner Caronte & Tourist.

The vessel will primarily operate on the strait of Messina between Villa San Giovanni – the main access point to Sicily from the Italian mainland – and the city of Messina. The 133-m long and 21.5-m wide ferry will have a capacity of up to 290 cars on two vehicle decks, and 1,500 passengers.

The EU Class B certificate ferry will also be operated on other routes, including to the Aeolian Islands.
