Focusing on advanced technology and smart shipping, classification society Lloyd’s Register and Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) have signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoU).

The first promotes research and development (R&D) and innovation, building upon s[ds_preview]trong existing collaborations (e.g. enhanced understanding of cargo liquefaction to increase vessel stability and safety, extreme wave impact to optimise time and cost of semi-submersible rig design) and extending into big data and intelligent systems for real time condition monitoring, unmanned systems and robotics for operations, maintenance and inspections and emerging areas such as 3D printing (metal additive manufacturing).

The second MoU, signed between LR, MPA, Alpha Ori Technology Holdings, Singapore and the Technology Centre for Offshore & Marine, Singapore (TCOMS), acknowledges the agreement to set up a Centre Of Innovation (COI) for SMARTShip Technology. The COI‘s efforts will be focused on projects related to smart shipping, advanced data analytics, and cyber security etc.

»Singapore can take a lead«

LR CEO Alastair Marsh said: »Today represents yet another step in LR’s commitment to the region, in particular to advance technology innovation especially in the areas of digital, big data and intelligent systems, unmanned systems and robotics, as well as to enhance safety, cyber/physical security and unlock economic and productivity enhancements for the maritime and marine sector.«

He added, »We see a very exciting future for Singapore, which is bringing disruptive, transformational thinking, especially in digital, data and software to the marine and offshore industry.
