The World Container Index assessed by Drewry was down by 1% to 1406.54 $/40ft container but up by 19% from the same period of 2016.

The average composite index of the WCI, assessed by Drewry for year-to-date, is US 1,542 $/40ft container, which is 120 $ lower than the five-year a[ds_preview]verage of 1,662 $/40ft container. It is also 19% higher than a year ago.

Ahead of the 1 August GRIs, the pace of rate erosion reduced on both Asia-Europe and Transpacific trades this week. Rates on the Shanghai-Rotterdam route lost 20 $ to 1,685 $ for a 40ft box.

On the other hand, the rates from Shanghai to New York slipped by 23 $ to reach 2,179 $ for a 40ft box and the rates from Shanghai to Los Angeles shed 24 $ to 1,218 $. The 1 August GRIs should lift the rates to the US and Europe next week.
