Upmost comfort and luxurious ambience play an increasingly important role on modern cruise liners. The right temperature on board ensures[ds_preview] for a comfortable atmosphere. Hence, special chillers are needed to meet these very particular requirements on the high seas.

The »Marenum« chillers of the Lindau-based company Engie Refrigeration have already been used on frigates for several years. In the future, the civil version of this chiller will also be cooling cruise liners of the British shipping company Saga Cruises. At present, two cruise liners are being constructed at Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Lower Saxony. These vessels are equipped with four Marenum chillers each. In 2019 both cruise liners will be launched in the Baltic Sea.

Gusty winds, strong waves and high salt concentrations in air and water – these extreme marine conditions are an enormous challenge for refrigeration technology aboard. Simultaneously, maximum reliability and highest efficiency of refrigeration supply are demanded to grant maximum comfort to the passengers at all times. For these requirements, Engie offers its Marenum chillers, which are said to be precisely adapted for high sea demands.

»The chillers are characterized by compact design, low sound and vibration emission, highest energy efficiency and low maintenance,« Engie says. The technology is reduced to the main components necessary for refrigeration – oil-free compressor, condenser, expansion body and evaporator – and thus saves space in the engine room. A redundant assembly with up to twelve compressors per unit increases operational safety. Thus, the Marenum chiller »can easily be adapted to the individual needs on site due to its modular construction«.
