In terms of ship types, Small Dry is the segment with the most vessels in the area (449) followed by tankers (203), bulkers (92), offshore vessels (86) and container ships (67).

Looking at the bulker trade routes into the Baltic, East Coast Australia and East Coast South America turn out to be the clear top runners as places of origin for these voyages in terms of cargo miles. While East Coast Australia holds the top spot in terms of cargo miles, (31.27 bn t/nm) at only 26 journeys in the past twelve months, East Coast South America with 99 journeys over the period and almost double the cargo quantity accounts for 29.88 bn t/nm.

The picture is quite different in the tanker business where North West Europe is the top dog with 2,813 distinct journeys over the past twelve months. 43.3mill. t where transported from that area of origin into the Baltic massing up 32.78 t/nm. West Africa comes in second in terms of cargo quantity and cargo miles (3.2mill. t, 15.8 bn t/nm).
