Necessary repairs are incurred, regardless of whether there is a pandemic or not. MarineShaft is therefore relatively confident about this business and is investing in new capacities

The Danish expert for class approved cold straightening of rudder stocks and propeller shafts is working on a extension of[ds_preview] its workshop and on new big lathes. The company sees itself as a »urgent repair workshop«, a strategy which requires fully equipped workshop facilities. Today, MarineShaft has 3 workshops at tree locations in Hirtshals. The workshop at Silvervej is 1,600m2, and it is being extended with 60m. Almost doubling the size of the workshop with a new 1,400m2. The lifting capacity will be increased from 100to 200t.

»We expect the building to be ready for use this fall,« says CCO Lisa Hjermitslev.

The plan for the extra 1,400m2 is to install a new 27m-long »Skoda« lathe that was recently bought. »Besides this lathe, we also need space for our biggest hydraulic press«, she adds.

This hydraulic press has a max press capacity of 8,000t and can cold straighten shafts up to 1,5m.

For the second field, the company specializes in, the manufacturing of new rudder stocks and propeller shafts, it was decided to invest in a certain stock of material right outside the workshop. The portfolio comprises e.g. round bars, stainless steel or bronze liners in long lengths, plates. When required, MarineShaft also sell raw material from stock, and they keep their stocklist updated and available on their website.

Having this stock has been extra valued during these Covid-19 times as, »even with very solid and loyal suppliers, delivery time for spare parts and material has taken longer«.

When asked about the supply chains Lisa Hjermitslev adds: »We have had urgent orders for new manufacturing and we have been lucky to have all the required material in stock, so we could maintain our fast delivery times.« Nonetheless, MarineShaft was affected by Corona, too, of course. It carries out all kinds of repairs to propeller equipment and rudder arrangements on-site. During the pandemic it has been more difficult to send service engineers on-site.

»We follow the Authorities travel recommendations to keep our employees safe. When possible to travel and solve a repair on-site we do, and during the pandemic we have had repair work abroad«, the company states, adding »We have been lucky to maintain a full workforce and we look optimistic at the future of our business.«
