The German Maritime Law Association (Deutscher Verein für Internationales Seerecht/DVIS) is[ds_preview] hosting the 41st CMI Conference in Hamburg and Berlin (add-on) from 14 to 19 June 2014. CMI is back in Germany exactly 40 years after the last conference in Hamburg took place in 1974. More than 200 maritime lawyers and experts from all over the world are expected to take part and discuss a variety of important maritime law topics and also law of the sea issues.

The Hamburg Conference will put the finishing touches to an Instrument on rules for the Judicial Sale of Ships. Also, there will be major preparatory works on a new set of the York-Antwerp Rules (YAR) on General Average, which hopefully will be widely accepted. This will be a further subject on the agenda of the next CMI Conference 2016 in New York.

The DVIS and the CMI have put together an interesting and broad ranging seminar programme. It addresses challenging topics of these days, such as ship finance and restructuring, cross-border insolvency or wrongful arrest. The programme further includes issues such as shipping in the arctic region, piracy, liability aspects, ship emissions, the implementation of MLC 2006 and more. Delegates will also visit the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in Hamburg and learn about its role, functions and case law.

Moreover, the German Maritime Law Association hosts the 9th annual meeting of the Young Maritime Law Associations (YMLA) of the Northwest European MLAs, which will take place on 14 to 15 June prior to the official opening of the CMI Conference on the evening of 15 June 2014. This time also young lawyers from other parts of the world, taking part in the CMI conference, are invited to join the YoungMLA seminar.

CMI Conference delegates will be offered an interesting and very refined evening programme. It includes an opening reception at the Anglo-German Club, an evening event at the International Maritime Museum Hamburg, a reception hosted by the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg in the Hamburg Town Hall as well as a gala dinner at the Hotel Atlantic.

Finally, the conference organisers have made arrangements for an optional add-on to the conference in Berlin on 18 and 19 June 2014. This will not only enable delegates from all over the world to experience the German capital; also a seminar on maritime laws in different regions of the world will be held, taking place in the Reichstag Building in Berlin, the home of the German parliament.

The conference is open to all interested persons. More information on the programme and the registration process can be found online.
