LNG contract for containerships

Finnish Containerships has signed a supply agreement with Shell to provide its[ds_preview] newbuildings with liquefied natural gas (LNG). The first of six dual-fuel containerships will join the fleet in 2017.

According to Containerships the contract includes bunkering of LNG at the Port of Rotterdam. The technical design of the vessels would allow for only one bunkering location within a normal »loop«. With the arrival of the new vessels the Finnish company will be the first shortsea container operator in Europe to run ships on LNG.

»The process of evaluating the many different alternatives has been lengthy and extensive, and we believe the solution we have found together with Shell will be mutually rewarding,« said Containerships’ CEO Kari-Pekka Laaksonen.

The series of six new containerships has been ordered by Hamburg based Reederei Nord.
