L-3 SAM Electronics announced that eleven Hanjin Shipping container vessels calling[ds_preview] at the US west coast ports of Long Beach and Oakland are to be fitted with its SAMCon high-voltage onshore power connection facilities. Sanil Electric is the prime contractor to L-3 SAM Electronics, and the end user will be Hanjin Shipping.

According to the company, SAMCon will enable the vessels to meet California’s upcoming strict clean air regulations, when berthed at the terminals, without generating harmful noise and air pollutants caused by active diesel engines. Scheduled to come into effect early this year, the regulations require alternate provision of shoreside emission-free electrical power for vessels while their main and auxiliary engines are disconnected.

SAMCon should be installed at the stern of each vessel, and should comprise a 40 foot container housing a complete range of electrical components designed for seamless acceptance of up to 7.2 MVA transferrable power at 6,600 volts together with a medium-

voltage switchboard, control and monitoring facilities, as well as a customised interface between ship and shore. Components also include an extendable cable reel drum for direct connection to shore-based power sources, the company said.

The modular SAMCon system can be easily adapted for different types of vessels and container configurations. The systems are already in use around the world, with assemblies aboard

Hapag-Lloyd vessels docking at the ports of Long Beach, Los Angeles and Oakland.
