OptiMarin AS with its Norwegian roots is a globally organized company and a pioneer in the emerging market for ballast water treatment systems. Opti-Marin delivered the world’s first ever commercial ballast water treatment system to the »Regal Princess«, a Princess Cruise ship in April, 2000.

The current Type Approved OptiMarin Ballast System (OBS) is well suited for any type or size of vessels. OptiMarin have[ds_preview] extensive experience from a total of 15 systems for a variety of vessels including cruise ships, container vessel, RoRo vessels and various offshore vessels.

The Type Approval Certificate was issued by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) on behalf of the Norwegian Maritime Administration in November 2009 and confirms OptiMarin compliance with the IMO’s International Convention for the Control and Management of Ship’s Ballast Water and Sediments, 2004. In March 2010 Germany through BG Verkehr confirmed acceptance of OptiMarin Ballast System type approval. OptiMarin has also received confirmation from the California State Land Commission that OptiMarin meets their standard for Best Available Technologies to be implemented starting 2010.

The OptiMarin Ballast System is based on the idea that such a system should be simple, flexible and easy to install and operate on board new builds as well as existing vessels. OBS is a mechanical system based on filtration and UV and do not affect the normal operation of the ship. The system is one of very few treatment options that do not introduce or generate chemicals or biocides in its treatment process. The key benefits of OBS are that it has a simple and reliable design which makes it flexible for retrofit and is operated as part of the normal ballast procedures. The system has a low pressure loss, generates no extra noise and has a small footprint.

In September 2009 the OptiMarin Ballast System was installed on board the »North Mariner«, an offshore supply vessel built in 2002. There was limited space on board the vessel for a ballast water treatment system, but due to OBS’ simple and flexible design the yard was able to find room for the system without any modifications to the vessel. Since the beginning of 2010 OptiMarin has received a total of eight orders for the OptiMarin Ballast System. The orders are placed by leading yards on behalf of major ship owners and the orders show that the market for ballast water treatment systems are starting to develop.

OptiMarin are continuously expanding the services network around the world. Currently there are service agreements with companies in Bremen, Germany, Singapore, Shanghai, China, Houston, USA, Algeciras, Spain, and Stavanger, Norway. OptiMarin also have a significant network of agents throughout the world that is being trained to give technical support when required.
