With some 30,000 visitors and 100 super yachts, this year’s exhibition (21–24 September) proves again to be the hot spot for the industry. The big question at the MYS is: Will the recovery of the market go on?

The 2011 Monaco Yacht Show (MYS) stands to be the most significant in its 21-year history. Not only will[ds_preview] MYS 2011 mark the coming of age of this luxury marine sector but it will importantly give a state of the industry message both to its current health and its future prospects.

A momentum for recovery in the global super yacht market has been developing for some two years, with each boat show adding its own positive input. At the 2010 MYS this also was the case but the recovery so far has been fragmented and not proved to be sustainable. The 2011 show will give a valuable insight from the market decisions makers on their views about where the market stands. This will include any impact from the recent Euro zone financial problems.

MYS 2011 is anticipated to present a strong recovery message for the super yacht market but it is readily accepted that there remains much ground to make up. Some 30,000 visitors are expected at the show to look at the 100 super yachts between approximately 25 m and 90 m and visit the 500 exhibitors. Of the 100 yachts, 40 will be new to the show.

The line up of yachts presents a wide range of new and other craft both motor and sail. For the new ones it is a chance for interested parties to see them for the first time while others are there because they are available for sale or charter.

Visit from the »Kaiser«

So far, the two largest yachts lined up for the event are both 85.60 m long and namely the »Cakewalk« built by the Derecktor shipyard in the US and the second being the »Seven Sea« built by Oceanco in the Netherlands. Both yachts were delivered last year. While the Oceanco one is being exhibited under its own name, the »Cakewalk« is being exhibited by Burgess, a leading international super yacht services company. »Cakewalk« gained much attention after her launch last year and appearance at the Fort Lauderdale show.

The main German related interest at the show in terms of exhibiting yachts will be two craft built by Abeking & Rasmussen. One is the 59.40 m motor yacht »Kaiser«, which was completed earlier this year, and the second is the 57.30 m motor yacht »Excellence III« which dates from 2001. This latter craft is being exhibited through the international brokers Burgess, whereas the »Kaiser« is being shown on behalf of her builders.

The »Kaiser« is the latest in the builder’s 60 m range of yachts which are styled by the British designer Donald Starkey. Prior to her appearance at Monaco »Kaiser« has been spending a few months since her launch cruising in the Mediterranean. Her interior design follows a Germanic theme which is said to have presented its designers, Bannenberg & Rowell, with a tough challenge. The interior was actually achieved by Rodiek, the interior manufacturer.

One of the 2010 deliveries from leading German builder Lürssen, the 68.15 m motor yacht »Hermitage«, will be on show in Monaco. However, a warning has gone out that access to view the yacht will only be offered to a very few select clients. »Hermitage« was designed by Espen Oeino with an interior by Andrew Winch.

Further German participation includes Drettmann Yachts. The company is exhibiting one of its »Bandido 90« 27.90 m motor yachts which was delivered last year having been built in Taiwan.

With some 40 yachts being shown for the first time, it will present potential buyers and owners with a wide-ranging opportunity to see the latest in design and technical layouts. Included among these will be the 65.50 m »Imagine« which is the first »Limited Editions 212« design motor yachts from the Dutch super yacht builder Amels, a subsidiary of the Damen Group. It is expected that this yacht will follow the earlier smaller sized »Limited Edition« yachts from Amels which caused considerable interest. The »Imagine« has exterior styling by Tim Heywood and a modern contemporary interior by Andrew Winch.

Of similar size is the 65 m »Nataly«, a delivery earlier this year from the Italian Benetti company. She has been designed by the Redman Whiteley Dixon studio, one of the leading super yacht design houses. With this combination »Nataly« is set to be shown a good amount of interest.

Made in Turkey

Over recent years Turkey has become a leading super yacht building country and one of the latest products from one of its yards, the 42.09 m motor yacht »E & E«, will be exhibited at Monaco by Cizgi Yachts. Completed in early August, this yacht has an Art Line designed interior which compliments the distinct exterior of the long range cruising yacht. She has been built to ABS class and is compliant to the LY2 large yacht code.

As the world’s largest super yacht building nation it is inevitable that several of the new yachts show products from Italian builders. One of the largest of these is the 70 m »Numptia« which was built by Rossi Navi with exterior styling by Studio Spadolini and her naval architecture by Axis Group Yacht Design. She has onboard space for 12 guests and 19 crew members. Among other Italian yachts that will inevitably generate interest are the 54 m »Prima«, the first delivery from Palumbo Yachts, the »Galileo G«, a 55 m explorer yacht from the Picchiotti arm of Perini Navi, and the 40 m »Skorpion« from San Lorenzo. On the sailing list one of the top highlights will be the 44.20 m »Hemisphere« which is the world’s largest sailing catamaran. She was built in the US but had her fit-out at the UK Pendennis Shipyard. This new yacht is being exhibited by Pendennis and Burgess and will be of major interest for sailing yacht owners. With just a 3 m draught she will be able to access many locations not possible to reach for other large sailing yachts.

Also likely to generate much interest is the »Fire Fly«, a 35.22 m yacht from Classen Jachtbouw in the Netherlands. Her particular interest will be that she is the first yacht of the new competitive »F Class« vessels. She was designed by the Hoek studio.

With the range of yachts on show, Monaco will produce a good event in its 21st year. In addition it may also confirm that the market is on a steady recovery path.
