Germany as one of the largest exporters of high-tech maritime equipment is an important supplier for Korean shipbuilders. In 2010 incoming orders from South Korea amounted to more than 900 million US$. According to the German industrial association VDMA this represents 9 % of the total foreign order value of German maritime equipment suppliers, the third largest share after EU countries and China. Korea’s significance is underlined with more than 50 German exhibitors at Kormarine 2011.

The Korean shipbuilding industry is in a good shape, as recent sales numbers show. In the first half of this year Korean shipyards regained the top position from China. According to the Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE) they received orders for 31.4 billion US$ or 8.9 million CGT – almost twice the number compared with the same period in 2010. China follows with 8.8 billion US$ or 5.2 million CGT. High quality and competitive prices in Korea convince also German ship owners.
