Founded in Stolberg in Rhineland in 1929, Wilhelm Hoven Maschinenfabrik has developed equipment since the beginning of oil hydraulics and[ds_preview] today specialises in tailor-made solutions. Among other things more than 100 employees construct seaworthy hydraulic cylinders for the latest generation of ship stabilizers. They are designed to ensure smooth movements even in heavy seas: Luxury yachts and cruise liners continue stable navigation, rolling movements are reduced.

Recently, Hoven has made cylinders for a system that will enable the effective stabilization of one of the largest sailing yachts in the world at all speed ranges. Thanks to the minimal angle of attack and stroke tolerances, movements around the longitudinal axis may be compensated.

Each of the four cylinders weighs 500 kg at 1,330 mm stroke and controls the extension and retraction of a stabilizer. The required tolerances proved challenging for Hoven‘s engineers as great robustness and compact dimensions were needed, too. Since the cylinders are housed with the complete kinematics in the vessel’s side, space is precious. The cylinders have been approved by classification society Germanischer Lloyd.

The in-house process-optimised production allows complete traceability of all components and materials used throughout the supply chain. Housing, piston rods and paint meet the international safety and environmental standards for use in ocean-going vessels.
