With ships becoming more and more sophisticated systems, never

losing control of power has become increasingly important
As manning on modern ships is constantly being reduced, reliable power technology is even more fundamental. »So we need smart[ds_preview] and easy products to help out,« says Oscar Rivella, Marine and Offshore Segment Marketing EMEA. UPS systems (uninterruptible power supply) are essential for many marine applications, be it offshore supply and installation vessels, cable layers, dredgers or cruise vessels. Systems like Eaton’s 9PHD are important for the safety of ships and crew members involved especially in critical operations. »We are happy when everything is going well, but we are prepared if not«, Rivella says. »Especially in harsh environments or critical offshore operations, everything on board is essential.« The new system covers propulsion and DP as well as emergency lighting and all other essential points.

The heavy-duty UPS features a modular design to deliver efficiency and optimised operating costs, without compromising reliability or safety. The system offers 96% efficiency in double conversion mode and 99% when operating in Eaton’s Energy Saver System (ESS) mode. This, together with the configurability and scalability, helps meeting specific power requirements.

As UPS units are often located in areas that are remote or difficult to access, installation and servicing can be challenging. The 9PHD UPS has a modular structure to provide for easier installation and maintenance. The systems target the offshore oil and gas market but as this field of business is slowing down, cruise ships become increasingly interesting. »Also other very specialized tasks, such as mine hunting are a field of application«, Rivella says.
