Schiffsdieseltechnik Kiel (SDT) was founded in Kiel in 1976. Today about 4,000 maritime engines, gears and aggregates are managed from the head office in Rendsburg and its local branches Helgoland, Wilhelmshaven and Stralsund worldwide
As an equipment manufacturer, SDT develops concepts for energy production and designs aggregates tailored to customers’ requirements. In addition to[ds_preview] seagoing vessels, yachts and work boats, the activities have been extended to offshore installations.

Since the foundation of the company, SDT is acting as a partner of ZF Marinegetriebe Deutschland. In the subsequent period, the company took over the distribution of Mercedes-Benz Marine Engines and started to design and manufacture wiring and emergency generators. Added to this was the distribution of MTU marine engines of the series 099 and 183 and the acquisition of the global supply of spare parts for Mercedes-Benz Wizemann Marine Engines. In 2005 SDT became a »direct dealer« for MTU in Northern Germany.

As part of their expansion, the company moved the head office from Kiel to Rendsburg in 2008. From there SDT took over representation of the Swedish company STT Emtec, which has a focus on exhaust gas cleaning systems. SDT opened its first subsidiary in Helgoland in 2011 and in the years following the company became a »direct dealer« of FPT Marine, Volvo Penta and Exomission. Last year, openings of branches in Wilhelmshaven and Stralsund followed.

The company’s own test facility in Rendsburg features testing for systems with an overall capacity of 7.2 MW as well as for new or fully overhauled diesel engines. The facility offers three test fields and one water-brake test bench. Every product is tested there prior to delivery. The production facility includes a crane and has two large entrances to ensure a safe and secure loading of systems weighing up to 30t, irrespective of the weather conditions. According to SDT it is especially customers whose systems need to be tested on-site who profit from the mobile load banks and from the portable instruments for measuring the volume and mass of objects and analysing structure-borne noises and exhaust gases.

After ten years of maintaining the quality management system, SDT has voluntarily established an integrated quality and environmental management system. According to the company it includes the economical use of resources and all employees adhere to reduced energy consumption and prevention of environmental damage as part of the sustainability guideline.

SDT assists in new engine related projects, in particular the construction of new units for ships, platforms and stationary or mobile power supply systems of 30 to 3,000 kVA. This includes maintenance and repair of equipment after commissioning in maritime and stationary applications.

In terms of renewable energy and offshore installations, SDT supplied mobile power for wind turbines during the construction phase and equipped substations with emergency power supplies. The service of the windpark facilities is carried out offshore.

Furthermore, SDT supplies the necessary consumables and provides the appropriate spare parts. Services and products are certiefied to ISO 9001 und ISO 14001 by DNV GL. The occupational safety organization of the company has been awarded the »Sicher mit System« seal of quality from the German Employer’s Liability Insurance Association for the Timber and Metal-Working Industry (BGHM) for its commitment to occupational health and safety. With different programs like dual education SDT aims at keeping skilled workers in the company.
