The eco-friendly hull cleaning system, established by HullWiper, can now be used worldwide, following the launch of its first leasing scheme.
This latest initiative makes it possible for ship owners and operators, technical managers, charterers, coatings companies, government ent[ds_preview]ities and other interested parties to use the brush- and diver-free Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) wherever approval has been given for its operation within port waters. The leasing scheme expands HullWiper’s geographical footprint through a network of established contacts and enables customers to reap the financial rewards of working with a system that is gaining ever greater recognition within the shipping industry.
A new model was needed
Until now, HullWiper has been available at selected locations in partnership with local partners. But a new operating model was needed to meet growing global demand. The option of leasing was first floated when the technology made its operational debut in late 2013. And now leasing makes it possible to expand HullWiper geographically faster and offers greater flexibility for lessees.
Through this new iniative, more members of the international maritime community can enjoy the benefits of HullWiper technology which saves both time and money in delivering a smooth, streamlined hull to optimise fuel efficiency, and does so without compromising the delicate marine environment or risking penalties for contaminating port waters with removed fouling.
The adjustable pressure seawater jets HullWiper uses to dislodge fouling eliminate the risk of damage to expensive hull coating associated with conventional methods using brushes and abrasives the company stated. Further, removed residues are captured for safe, ecologically-approved disposal on land, so no debris is released into the sea. The cleaning process is monitored using CCTV cameras. No divers are needed so associated costs and the potential risk to human life is eliminated. Cleaning can be carried out day or night, and in most weather conditions, even when loading or unloading is underway whilst the vessel is in port, saving valuable time and money.
HullWiper has been approved for use at ports in the Middle East, Europe and Asia, and more than 700 hull cleaning operations have been conducted to date.
