The seaport’s rail hinterland cargo transport continues to grow. Kiel expects 30,000 cargo units to be loaded from rail to[ds_preview] ship, that means an increase of over 10%. With some operational adjustments at the shunting yard Meimersdorf, Kiel has just taken some important steps in order to strengthen its competitive position. Where trains with a maximum length of 500m could enter before, it is now possible to have trains with a total length of up to 600m.

At Schwedenkai as well as in Ostuferhafen there are now powerful gantry cranes loading the combined transport trains. Further improvements will follow.

»In the medium-term, Kiel must become directly accessible for freight trains of 750m length. This is supposed to be possible as from autumn 2017«, says Dirk Claus, Managing Director Port of Kiel.
