The third vessel built at Havyard for Norsk Fisketransport (Norwegian Fish Transport) was named »Steigen«. It uses a new and environmentally friendly tool in the fight against salmon louse.

»Steigen« arrived at Havyard Ship Technology in January. According to the shipyard it only[ds_preview] took 19 weeks to outfit the vessel, compared to a normal 30-week period. During the finishing stage, 220 people were called into action simultaneously at Havyard Ship Technology in Leirvik, in order to complete the swift outfitting process.

»Steigen« is a Havyard 587 design, is 85 m long, 16.9 m wide and is outfitted for seawater filtering during loading of fish for freshwater treatment, and has equipment for fish sorting and counting, plus RSW system for refrigeration. MMC First Process has delivered the fish handling system on-board. The newbuilding has a total tank volume of 3,200 m3 and is capable of loading around 640 t of slaughter fish. Systems have been designed in such a way that process water and transport water from all operations can be filtered and treated. The ship includes freshwater capacity of around 1,000 m3 for refills and freshwater replacement during freshwater treatment. The ship is also equipped with water surveillance technology, ensuring complete control of all water parameters at all times.

According to Havyard the three sister ships »Havtrans«, »Namsos« and »Steigen«, are all different from other live fish carriers in terms of speed and fuel economy. Even with fully loaded fish tanks, the sister ships can operate at a speed of 14 kn.
