Norwegian Offshore Heavy Transport (OHT) enters the renewables market with a new heavy lift and installation vessel. The semi-submersible concept is a novelty

Ulstein Design & Solutions has developed the »Alfa Lift« design in close co-operation with OHT. The first vessel – with options[ds_preview] existing for two more – will be built by China Merchant Heavy Industry (CMHI). It is intended to be ready for construction and installation jobs in early 2021.

The capabilities of the DP vessel were developed in accordance with future requirements of the offshore wind industry. The ship is going to be able to load up to ten jacket foundations weighing 1,500t each. Alternatively it can take eleven XXL monopiles (2,000t each) as well as transition pieces for wind turbines.

The 48,000tdw vessel can perform heavy-lift operations with a submerged main deck which increases stability. The patent-pending design combines the advantages of a semi-submersible transport vessel with a 3,000t crane, a Liebherr HLC 150000. Thanks to the foldable A-frame the vessel can pass under bridges easily and thereby optimize operating times and costs.
